Meet Kimberley Clouser: The Airline Trail Lady
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in East Hampton. I went to Mercy High School, Plymouth State College and Purdue University.
Tell us about your bikes.
I currently have an old trek on my trainer for indoor riding (boring!) and a Liv Rove which I have put over 10,000 miles on. I’ll ride my bike (Maggie the Magenta Magnificent) about any where. Gravel is my favorite.
How did you get into cycling?
I grew up on a dead end street in the Salmon River State Forest. We were always outside playing. I loved riding bikes. Never used training wheels. I took a two week bike packing trip with the Girl Scouts when I was about 12 or 13. Other aspects of life took bikes away for a too many years. My husband bought me an inexpensive bike for Christmas one year. I fell in love all over again. I rode my bike to work and the school kids thought I was badass. When I moved back to CT in 2014 I was gifted a used bike with no seat. Pedal Power tuned it up and helped me accessorize it. A friend invited me to ride and I haven’t looked back since. My love of biking led me into a shop in East Hampton as soon as they opened: Airline Cycles. This opened so many doors and friendships. I am a member of Stage 1, that doesn’t race.
Tell us about your involvement with the Airline Trail?
When East Hampton Park and Rec was looking to start an Airline Trail committee, I jumped at the opportunity. I have been on the committee since it started (4 years I think). We hold at least two trail maintenance days per year, host an event or two for National Trails, and offer an interactive Facebook page.
What are the most important things for us to know that use trails like the Airline Trail?
Be trail stewards: carry in/ carry out. Report issues to DEEP or local town. Use good manners when sharing the trail.
What are ways we can get involved with our local trail systems?
Volunteer to help in anyway possible. It’s fun and the Rails to Trails are an important community resource.
What would you tell someone just getting into cycling?
If you want to get into biking: visit your Local Bike Shop. You can get a decent second hand bike while you figure out what kind(s) of biking you are most interested in pursuing.
Tell us what you love to do outside of cycling?
Outside of biking I love reading, hiking, pickleball, and eating lobster rolls and chocolate!
Anything else we should know?
I participate in the Stage 1 segment challenge each year. I also have completed the Coffeeneuring Challenge for 6 straight years. And, I lead casual social rides for Airline Cycles. We ride ever Thursday night at 6:00pm year round.
